Summer Summer Summer Time!!!
July the 4th is one of the nations great pastime and the crown point of the summer time. The opportunity to appreciate being an American, celebrating it with family and friends, and to pay homage to the ones that sacrifice their lives for us by embracing each other despite our background. When the time comes to enjoy these moments, I believe this defines the ultimate high of the summer. Although, we don’t realize the essence of these moments, we definitely live up to them. I know this because I am a victim...until now. My inspiration to write about July the 4th come from how fast summer comes and goes. By the time we realize that kids are going back to school and adults are returning from vacation, we look back at the summer only to ask ourselves “Is summer over already?” To save the good times and unforgettable moments from the depths of amnesia, I bring to you my July the 4th in hopes that my experience will make the summer one to remember!
On a ordinary weekend in the summer time a regular weekend would consist of moves that would be made to live spots such as Adams Morgan or the CFE(A go-go spot) filled with laughter, what’s left of a fifth of Long Island Ice Tea, and couple of Bob Marleys (niccee :). Nevertheless, this time is different. This time we don’t recover from the long weekend on Sunday or Parlay with the fellas playing the madden followed by some female that has been waiting for your company all weekend. On this Sunday, we relive it like just like it started. Only this time our family and friends has moves to make after the am service lol.
Waking up from the aftertaste of the Long Island and mom’s breakfast, I struggle to come to my feet after procrastination of pulling off the soft comforter and sheets that ever so gently caressed my body lol. Thinking about if I remember the highlights of my night as I eat breakfast, I put my phone on the charger to get juiced up for the day. Nothing is better than getting in the shower, brushing your teeth and throwing some smell good on. Juelz Santana said it the best, “I’m already fly and I ain’t event put my clothes on yet” lls. Looking at my wardrobe it’s couple things to choose from. Everyone has their own style and taste that fits the type of person they are. It’s summer time so it was only right that I throw on a crispy white v-neck, some 501’s, my 993’s, and a fitted. Just seem like the fresh thing to do.
As I watch MTVJams looking at Suckerfree Sundays, I get a call from my man JuJu. “Moe what you about to be on for the 4th?” I reply “IDK what’s the move fool??” My man JuJu is a go with the flow type of guy but when he has a move, 9 times out of 10 you will definitely enjoy yourself. He assures me that today will be a good day by telling me “My folks is throwing their annual July the 4th cookout around the Toga, you trying to make that move?” For you people that is not familiar with the “Toga”, it’s a neighborhood in NE, D.C . The full name is Saratoga. The best advice I can give you about the toga is if your not from there or don’t know anyone from there don’t go there lol (seriously though).
So it’s set. Stepping outside feeling the 1:00pm weather puts a different feeling in you. Yea, if you ask the next person, it’s another day another dollar. If you were to ask me, it’s the same way Fresh Prince starts the video when Jazzy Jeff hands him glass of koolaid and they look up in the sky as the scene plays the music--> priceless. You hop in your whip that you been cleaning all yesterday or Sunday morning. Nothing is out of place and the fresh alpine scent in the car makes you remember the first day you drove off the lot. Scrolling down your ipod, navigation system, or skimming through you cd’s, it’s to nice of a day to not have the right music playing as you pull off. Of course it will vary as the day progresses, still, the right type of music thats starts a beautiful day like this cannot be overlooked. I am a man of diversity in Hip Hop and Go-Go, so i start off with a classic Northeast Groovers CD then follow up with the Ryhmes & Reasons by DJ BLACKHOUSE (check him out on twitter and datpiff). Funky fresh dress to impress ready to party!!!
I slide through the fella’s cribs to assemble the team and we’re off to the city! Riding through pennsylvania ave. can be a average thing to a native of D.C but for a guy like me that resides in MD it’s a little different. The feeling can be compared to someone that has been shipped off to the war and comes back home to their family for the first time. It’s nothing like it =). At every other light you have a hustleman selling water, roses and fireworks. You think nothing to crunch your thirst by purchasing some water but the joy of Helping Our Brothers Out while they grind in the city heat brings joy to the ride through the city on this marvelous day. Bumping music, freestyling, and adliving each others verses attracts the attention of a group of females that pulls next to us at a light. Nothing appears but smiles and waves. They respect that we are real live and we showing the city love so in return they do the same. By this time the cookout is in motion and family is embracing the beautiful day that we are blessed to have.
For some reason whenever you come to a party it just seems like you arrived at the right time right? Good people this was on of those moments. Hugs and kisses are overflowed from aunties and grandparents that are happy to the fellas. Uncles and cousins are dapping (high-fiving) and giving brotherly love. The line for the food is starting up and all you think “where would I be if I wasn’t here with my family and friends?” Because the day is going so well you are quickly distracted by one of your Uncle’s calling you over to them so they can see how you been doing and pointing to the cutie in the sundress shouting “ Good Lawwd Have Mercyy!!” lol. She might not be Mrs. Parker but you can put up a good argument that she is related lol.
As the night starts to fall, the neighborhood hustler or businessman stops through to show out the custom fireworks that you would be paying double if you were to get them any where else. Kids stop playing ball and the men take a break from conversing to see what he has to offer. By the time the hustler is finish doing business at the cookout, everyone is excited to test the fireworks out. If your assuming they were anything like you may have seen for your July the 4th you are wrong. They were better! Who would think the smiles of the children being astounded by spelling wild lights would bring the childhood back into your eyes as you see them look up smiling and asking if they can try it next. “Forever Young” is what you feel the most similar to the track from Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3. You almost wish this moment could pause forever where you are surrounded by the love of your family, the drive down memory lane with your friends, and the amazing fireworks that everyone pauses and look up to see when the first one is shot in the air.
Call me far fetched but these moments in our lives is transcendent. When you are going through life living for your family and sacrificing for the wealth, we can sometimes overlook the small things that matter to us. Especially when they come around every year because it’s almost expected that what doesn’t happen now will happen next time but tomorrow is not promised to us. So sometimes it’s never a bad thing to recap the moments that are special to us with the ones that are special in our lives.
